Next generation producers teaches youth through hands-on instruction with state of the art digital media production, equipment, and facilities. Youth aquire the skills needed to create media projects that communicate their own ideas to the broader community.
Next generation producers partners with other Somerville youth-serving organizations to reach a diverse group of teens, many of whom are from low-income immigrant families. The teens work together in a safe, collaborative, and supportive environment to create projects that express their own positive values and aspirations. They research issues of importance to their community, develop leadership skills, and explore new academic and career options.
Programs are tailored to the interests of the collaborating organizations and the youth they serve. Past projects have explored serious issues in the lives of teens such as substance and tobacco use, racism, and domestic violence, as well as the positive influences of basketball, music, and art. The videos take many forms, including to the point public service annoucements, music videos using original compositions, video collages of recited poetry, documentaries, and drama.
In 2006 and 2007, teens won first place awards from the Alliance for Community Media, for documentaries they produced at SCAT.
