Animation/Soundtrack with Karen Aqua

Award-winning Boston animator Karen Aqua will conduct a five-week hands-on workshop in hand-drawn animation. During the final 2 sessions, we will be joined by renowned composer/musician Ken Field, who will help students create a soundtrack for the film.

Students will explore movement and transformation using a variety of drawing and under-the-camera techniques, including flipbooks, cut-outs, and object animation. Sound effects and music will be recorded to accompany the visuals.

Karen Aqua has been making animated films since graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in 1976. Her award-winning films have screened worldwide, at festivals in Europe, Asia, North/South America, New Zealand, and Australia. She has been a juror for film festivals in Japan, Canada, and USA. She teaches animation at workshops and schools around the US, and has presented numerous one-person screenings of her work.

Saxophonist/composer Ken Field is a member of the modern music ensemble Birdsongs of the Mesozoic and leader of the improvisational brass band the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble. He has released several CDs of his solo music for layered saxophones, and has composed music for dance, film, and video.

Aqua and Field have collaborated on numerous animation/soundtrack projects since 1976. Their work together includes both independent films and freelance work for “Sesame Street.” They have been teaching together for 10 years, with residencies in Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts (including at the ICA and Boston Museum of Fine Arts).
