Take a Class

Transform yourself from passive consumer to active producer of television programs. Walk into Somerville Community Access Television with no media experience and we will train you to realize your vision and get your video on TV. The classes are project-based and designed to get you produce programs quickly. You learn as you make TV, with SCATV staff available and eager to help.

For Somerville residents, the first step is to join SCATV by attending a free Orientation session and paying the annual membership fee. Classes are open to non-members as well, although they will not have access to SCATV's equipment and facilities after finishing the class. Most students begin by taking the Portable Production and Editing Classes or the Studio Production Class.

Members become certified to use SCATV’s portable cameras after taking the Portable Production class and shooting a short certification tape. Members become certified to use SCATV’s main studio by taking the class and crewing on two productions. Members become certified to use SCATV’s edit computers by taking the Basic Editing class and completing a short edited video. If a member has experience in these areas, he or she may schedule a session with a staff person to “test-out” of the classes by demonstrating competency.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The class tuition must be paid when you register. Please check the prerequisites for each class because some classes build on skills learned in other classes.

SCATV offers unpaid, hands-on TV production internships to qualified students every semester. Interns are required to work at least 10 hours each week, and may receive credit from their schools. Interns produce community service programs for Channel 3 in the studio and in the field, and they are welcome to take SCATV classes at no charge if space is available. For a description of the internship activities, visit the link below. To apply for an internship, send a resume and cover letter to director@access-scat.org.
