Utsav! A Festival of Punjabi & Sikh Culture

The Festival on September 10 in Union Square was a huge success.
It was a collaboration of the Sikh Sangat Society, Somerville Community Access Television and the Somerville Arts Council.

Utsav is an Indian word meaning “feast-day” or festival. Hundreds of people of all backgrounds came together to enjoy the presentations of Punjabi music and dance. The Sikh presenters explained Sikh history and some traditions, including meditation techniques, chanting, and the characteristic turbans.  The evening began with Kirtan music, performed by Kartar Singh Anan and Group. This group hails from New Delhi, India and currently performs at Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Society Boston.

There was also a generous amount of traditional homemade Punjabi free food and drinks (soda, water, etc.) provided by the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Society.

Other notable performances and activities included: Gatka performance, a form of martial arts practiced by Sikhs; the Try-On-A-Turban (or Sari) Photo Booth; a Yoga class by the Millis Gurdwara (http://www.kundaliniyogane.com/grda.html); and Dhandis, Historical Religious Singers, from NYC.

As it grew darker, a series of short films were shown about Punjabi and Sikh culture.
