Orientation
Learn about SCATV and public access television at a free orientation open to the public. All new members are required to attend an orientation before registering for classes.

Studio Classes
Studio Audio for Television
This class will familiarize students with SCATV’s studio audio equipment to get the best possible sound for their own productions. The first 2 meetings will cover the science of audio, microphone types and placement, the mixing console, effects, equalization, and compression. The final class will focus on recording live music with a real band while taping an episode of Somerville Rocks!
Insructor Josh Langberg has a degree in audio and media technology from the New England Institute of Art. He has worked as head sound engineer at the Linwood, a Boston rock and roll club, and as head studio engineer for Smo Money Entertainment Group. Currently he is a lead quality assurance engineer for the audio software company, Cakewalk.
Three Monday evening sessions from 7:00 to 9:30pm.
$50 for members, $75 for non-members

Portable Production/Editing
Basic Portable Equipment
In this hands-on class, Students will learn camera operation, audio techniques, and the basics of lighting in the field. The group will brainstorm project ideas and will be encouraged to work together to shoot field footage. Students will have one month after the instruction sessions to take out the cameras and get familiar with the equipment. During that time, any questions that arise will be answered by the instructor. After completing the class and at least two practice sessions, the student becomes “camera-certified” and may take out the cameras for TV projects.

Basic Editing
Learn to organize your production and edit your video footage in the SCATV edit suites using Final Cut Express software. Includes graphics, transitions, filters, and audio sweetening. Students are certified after completing the class and demonstrating competency and may reserve the edit stations for SCATV projects.

Portable Equipment 2: Video Storytelling
This hands-on class will take the concepts and techniques covered in SCATVs Basic Portable class and apply them towards fiction-based short movie production. Storyboarding, scripting, lighting, cinematography, audio and editing will be covered in depth as students are guided through directing their own original productions. In addition to making individual or collaborative videos, the class will produce an original practice project during class meetings. The class will culminate with a final public screening “mini-festival” of all of the projects.
Instructor: Gordon Nelson, an experienced filmmaker and instructor.

Special Workshops
Super-8 Filmmaking
Learn the art of Super 8 Filmmaking at SCATV! No video format can truly replicate the unique “look” of film and this course will cover the basics of working with this special format. Using a Super 8 camera, students will have the opportunity to shoot their own rolls of film and edit their movies using either traditional splicing or digital techniques. We will also cover some “direct animation” styles, such as hand-painting, tinting, and scratching the film. At the end of the course, we will hold a screening in SCATV’s studio.
