Experimental Video

Television as a form of unlimited creative expression will be emphasized in this production course designed for anyone seeking to explore new frontiers in the medium of video. Projects made in this class will combine unusual traditional techniques with current digital video and sound processes to allow students to make their own distinctive video art. Green screen, optical effects, video feedback and editing will be covered along with personal, non-technical approaches to video production.

Tuition: $100 for SCATV members; $175 for non-members

Shooting in the Field

Join SCATV for a day of hands-on fun. Bring your personal video camera or (limited to the first five requestees) use one of our portable kits. Learn situational shooting from our own pro Bill Barrell. We will be shooting the architecture in Union Square, the monument on Prospect Hill, and along the Mystic River.

Filmmakers' Workshop with Lynn Weissman

This production workshop is for new filmmakers seeking a direct, hands-on learning experience leading to basic understanding of documentary filmmaking techniques. As a class we’ll produce a short web video centering on activities and people around Union Square, Somerville. Students will explore the fundamentals of conceptualizing, planning, shooting and editing, and will be ready to undertake further work based on the workshop experience.

Social Networking Web Tools for Non-Profits

Social Media 101: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube

This workshop for non-profit organizations and agencies  will help you develop a social media strategy using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  Topics include: how to generate followers and stimulate discussion, how to maintain your social media identity, how to manage your time, and how to measure success. Examples will be presented at every stage to help you create a successful strategy using social media tools.

Digital Storytelling

Participants will learn to weave together images, first person narration and music to tell personal stories using iMovie software. The instructor will guide students to write well-structured narrations and make creative use of visuals and audio for dramatic effect. The class is great for those who want to share memoirs, community stories or organizational profiles from their own point of view. Students are encouraged to begin organizing photos for the project in advance of the first class.

Creating a News Package

Learn to write headlines like the pros in this two-session news story/package writing/production workshop. Discover what it takes to make a compelling news package. The story, the script, the b-roll, the edit and how they all contribute to making an enjoyable and educational news piece. Using the ever popular who, what, where, when and why you will learn to write and package your video like the news pros.

Animation/Soundtrack with Karen Aqua

 Award-winning Boston animator Karen Aqua will conduct a six-week hands-on workshop in hand-drawn animation. During the fourth and fifth sessions, we will be joined by renowned composer/musician Ken Field, who will help students create a soundtrack for the film. The sixth session is a screening party for students and friends.

Students will explore movement and transformation using a variety of drawing and under-the-camera techniques, including flipbooks, cut-outs, and object animation. Sound effects and music will be recorded to accompany the visuals.

Digital Still Camera Workshop

This introductory still photography class will meet the needs of students who have their own digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. The rising popularity of digital SLR cameras has created a revolution in the photography world. Using Adobe Photoshop software and working with RAW images on Apple computers, students will be in command of the many features of these advanced cameras while creating photographs ready for framing.

Tuition: $75 SCATV members; $125 non-members
Four Monday sessions from 1:00 to 3:30pm.

Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking

Burgeoning filmmakers often shoot hours and hours of great footage – and then have no idea what to do next. Freelance filmmaker Lynn Weissman will flesh out what steps to take after shooting to help streamline the creative, intense, and often overwhelming process of video editing. The 7 steps are: 1) Window Dubbing, 2) Transcription/Logging, 3) Culling Your Gems, 4) Storyline and Structure, 5) Themes, 6) Script Development/The Paper Edit, 7) Script Completion.
