Membership

Equipment Members

Any Somerville resident may join SCAT as an Equipment Member. Equipment Members are entitled to enroll in video production classes; become certified to enjoy free use of the production facilities in order to make programs to be cablecast on Somerville's own Channel 3; receive SCAT's quarterly newsletter; receive technical assistance for program creation and promotion; exercise voting privileges at annual meetings; and are eligible for election as a Member Representative on the SCAT Board of Directors.

To become an Equipment Member, a person must fulfill the following:

  • Attend an Orientation Session
  • Sign and submit a membership form agreeing to abide by SCAT's Policies and Regulations
  • Pay the current membership fee
  • Show proof of Somerville residency (positive photo ID and a copy of a current utility bill, rental/lease agreement, or notarized letter)

Note: Discounts are available for senior citizens and youth. Discounted memberships in exchange for volunteer hours are also available at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Organization Members

Any organization based in Somerville may join SCAT, including a business and Somerville chapter of any state or national organization. The campaign of any political candidate running in Somerville may join SCAT as an Organization Member. An Organization Membership includes membership privileges for two representatives of the organization (the primary and secondary contacts for the group). Additional individuals from the organization may then join by paying additional membership fees. Organization Members may use SCAT’s resources only to produce programs related to their organization. Programs may not be used for commercial purposes.

Contributing Members

Anyone may join SCAT as a Contributing Member. A Contributing Member gives an annual donation (minimum $40.00) to help SCAT continue its work. Contributing Members receive special recognition as well as email updates and SCAT’s quarterly newsletter. With appropriate experience, Contributing Members may rent SCAT equipment and facilities.

Internships

SCAT offers internships to college students studying Television Production or Communications, and other individuals with applicable skills upon approval of the Executive Director. Interns must work at least ten hours/week at SCAT. There is no financial compensation. SCAT inerns will be supervised by SCAT staff as they create programming either by themselves or as part of a team. All programs will be aired on Somerville Channel 3. Students will be allowed to keep copies of their work for use in their portfolios. Interns may take SCAT workshops at no charge upon approval by the Executive Director.

SCAT expects intern applicants to have prior production experience and show examples of their work (school projects are accepted). Working as a SCAT intern is a great way to get professional experience while contributing to the Somerville community.

Relationship with SCAT

Members and interns are not employees of SCAT. They shall not misrepresent themselves as employees of SCAT or speak on behalf of SCAT.
